As I scanned recipes that could help heal and soothe a sore throat, I came across many that made me deeply ponder how I would ever eat them while having a sore throat.

I think of selecting ingredients that are easy to swallow and aid the curing process. Not ingredients that are scratchy and may increase inflammation.

I created a recipe that I use for my family when a throat is scratchy, inflamed, or sore.

Additionally, I show you how this recipe is easily adjusted by swapping foods to accommodate taste and creating a consistency of personal preference.

The Base For The soup

The soup base creates a powerful foundation for healing. It simmers herbs into a broth that adds valuable properties for mitigating symptoms. It begins by bringing a whole organic chicken to a boil with carrots, celery, red onion, garlic, and select herbs, producing a delicious and powerful soup broth.

Broth and Soup Ingredients - Why they are powerful

Whole organic Chicken

The chicken will provide the broth with vitamins and minerals essential to aiding sore throat relief. Also, some protein will be added to the broth as well when simmering the chicken. The use of chicken adds a comforting and delicious flavor which works well with the infused herbs.

Carrots and Celery

These are two foods that you will often see included in a basic soup broth recipe. Carrots add sweetness, and celery adds a little earthy flavor. This adds depth to the broth's flavor profile while still adding many vitamins and mineral benefits, such as Vitamins A and K.

Garlic and Ginger

Garlic is added to the broth only, while ginger is used in both the broth and the soup itself. They are both flavorful and contain healing compounds to alleviate sore throat symptoms.

They are both natural anti-inflammatories, like the herbs in the soup that you will learn about later. This compounds the anti-inflammatory properties making adding further value to the recipe.

Furthermore, these two ingredients are great for the immune system. Creating a healthy immune system to fight the sore throat is important. However, if garlic bothers you, then you will still get many great benefits if you decide to leave it out.

Additionally, ginger is beneficial to digestive health. Adding it to the soup allows for better digestive interaction with the soup ingredients. -Flavorful and valuable-a win, win for sure.

Licorice Root

One of the potent herbs used to beat sore throat symptoms is licorice root. However, less of this herb is used compared to the others because licorice will strengthen the potency of the herbs with which it is used.

The herb is great for activating liver function to cleanse the body and works great at reducing inflammation. It has a distinct flavor that melds nicely with the other foods and herbs used.

Thyme

Thyme is an antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial that prevents sickness and fights sickness. It also provides the body with antioxidants and immune support by preventing harm from free radicals. Additionally, according to this science article, mucous membrane health is supported by this herb.

Marshmallow Root

Another herb infused into both the broth and the soup is marshmallow root. This herb provides a layer of protection on the lining of the respiratory passages and the digestive system. This layer soothes and defends against irritants.

Orange Peel

Dried orange peel is used in the soup recipe, not the broth. It is often used in herbal medicine for its valuable properties on digestive and immune health. Loaded with vitamin C, orange peel strengthens the immune system.

Foods added to the Soup

Carrots

Carrots are a valuable asset when it comes to alleviating a sore throat. They are high in vitamin A content, which is a valuable asset in mucous membrane support. Also, they soften in the soup. This allows you to swallow and digest the food more easily.

Honeynut Squash

This vegetable adds crazy flavor to a soup. These squash resemble the shape of butternut, but in mini form. The flavor is similar in texture to butternut squash but sweeter in flavor.

The honeynut squash is high in beta carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. This means that the body will take the beta carotene and convert it into vitamin A.

Vitamin A is beneficial for having healthy mucus membranes and the immune system.

This directly helps in the healing of a sore throat because the lining of the throat (mucous membranes) is inflamed when you have a sore throat. These antioxidants work to relieve sore throat symptoms.

There is controversy about vitamin A intake due to too high levels of this vitamin being toxic. However, the body will only convert what it needs from beta carotene due to the intake being in food form versus supplement form.

Parsley

Parsley is a great source of flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin K and vitamin C. These vitamins and antioxidants protect the body from and help fight chronic diseases and illnesses. Lastly, parsley helps fight bacteria that invade the throat and respiratory system, causing illness and infection.

substitutions and add-ins

You can easily substitute, add in, or leave out whichever foods you would like to make the soup more palatable for a sore throat. The broth itself is what makes this soup so beneficial. The herbs infuse into the broth and then the soup itself to offer the body comfort and ultimate healing properties.

Subs and Add-ins include:

  • Chicken-cut up or shredded
  • Rice
  • Quinoa
  • Lentils
  • Butternut squash
  • Sweet potato
  • White or yellow potato

Alternatively, you omit the parsley and puree the soup for easier swallowing and digestion of the vegetables.
