Gluten and Dairy Free Snacks (To Make Shopping Easier)

Gluten and dairy free snacks are easier to find these days than they used to be, but it can still be challenging to know what to buy. This will help you until you get used to navigating the gluten-free and dairy-free realms.

gluten and dairy free snacks

When my family decided to go gluten-free and dairy-free, I would've loved to have a useful guide on what to buy. Raising young ones and adding in a new way of eating is overwhelming.

I mean, it was difficult when we first went gluten-free. But when we added a dairy-free lifestyle on top of the gluten-free, things got even more crazy. Plus, we were already careful about eating foods without too many crazy additives.

I was limited on the number of quality resources I could find to help me out. I found gluten-free, but to find both gluten and dairy-free was unusual. More often than not, I would find vegan-free instead of dairy-free.

Therefore, to help you all out, I have put together a list of gluten-free and dairy-free snacks that are tried and true and are more than just the obvious ones. This would be helpful for those with a gluten sensitivity but also for those sensitive or allergic to dairy products, or if you are like our family, both.

what to know when buying gluten and dairy- free

READ FOOD LABELS - Different words used to refer to the terms gluten and dairy. These terms will help you quickly identify whether a snack is safe for consumption according to the GF and DF diets.

  • Wheat and Dairy are both on the top 8 allergens list. If a product contains one of these, it will be labeled accordingly.
  • Dairy products will have dairy labeled in the list of ingredients or contain a phrase similar to "contains milk" on the item.
  • Some gluten-free products will have the label GF on them or will say certified gluten-free. However, other products include terms such as wheat in the ingredient list, signifying it is not gluten-free. Refer to this site if unsure what exactly to look for.

ALLERGY LIST - Often, certain brands will have a place on their product listing all of the common allergies that the product is free from. This makes it quick for the consumer to view. You will quickly come to know the brands that include them.

THE TERM VEGAN - Vegan means it does not include any animal products, including dairy. So, even if you do not see dairy free on the label, if you see vegan, you will know that it is okay to eat if you are looking to avoid dairy.

CROSS CONTAMINATION - Cross contamination can occur if a place processes gluten or dairy products as well as products free from these ingredients. Often, this will be stated on the label. Possible statements will say, "This product is processed in a facility that also processes foods that contain gluten/dairy."

COCOA BUTTER - Although butter is in the word butter, it does not actually contain dairy. This is a safe dairy-free product to eat.

Why do people buy gluten And/or dairy free?

  • One has been diagnosed with a gluten and/or dairy intolerance or allergy.
  • They have negative reactions when they eat gluten or dairy.
  • A person is pursuing different diets with the expectation to lose or manage weight.
  • Other benefits to the person's health
  • For personal reasons other than health

Where to begin?

There are quite a few brands to choose from, and some will stick out to you as being better than others. Everyone has tastes and textures they prefer, but some brands are liked by many.

I am developing a printable of the brands I prefer, which will be coming out shortly. This is for those who need a starting point before spending a lot on random brands for their family.

The lists below are helpful for knowing which products are gluten and dairy free. However, I personally do not prefer to use all of the brands. It is also important to read the labels because companies occasionally change their ingredient list and certifications. The below brands should be a good starting point overall.
