The gut microbiome is an amazing system that supports the brain, body, and immune system. When all microorganisms are balanced and working well, it functions at its best. When it gets out of whack, symptoms can show, including acne.

The digestive system plays a significant role in skin health. Therefore, balancing gut bacteria and healing the digestive tract can result in healthy skin.

An imbalance in the gut is called gut dysbiosis. You may want to focus on surface skin problems, and that is okay and understandable. However, long-term effects may begin with healing an unhealthy gut.

How To Get Rid of Acne Caused By Gut Imbalance

Balance Gut Microbiome

Gut flora must be well-balanced and addressed when you struggle with acne vulgaris. Gut flora includes bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Skin issues can occur when good and bad bacteria in the stomach are out of whack. There are several reasons for this.

Some of these reasons include toxins in your environment, such as mold or harmful chemicals, the use or overuse of antibiotics, other medications, improper diet, hormonal issues, chronic inflammation, chronic stress, and underlying health issues.

Importance of Good Bacteria

We have already established that good bacteria support good gut health. But some of their roles may surprise you. The following is a list of reasons why good bacteria in the gut are essential for a healthy body:

  • They strengthen the intestinal lining, reducing intestinal permeability so that only nutrients get through.
  • Synthesize vitamins, such as Vitamin K.
  • Provide energy for some cells of the gut.
  • Help maintain gut microbial balance
  • Supports healthy immune functioning
  • Prevents harmful bacteria from growing and colonizing
  • Breaks down toxins and harmful substances
  • Helps to keep inflammation down
  • Improves digestion by breaking down cellulose, fiber and undigested carbohydrates
  • Helps regulate gut movement and bowel function
  • Improves nutrient absorption and metabolism

Ways to Balance Gut Microbiota

Diet

Take out irritants

Common foods that cause problems with digestive health include gluten, dairy, corn, soy, nuts, processed foods, artificial chemicals, and foods high in sugar.

However, I often see foods recommended for people suffering from skin issues that need to be approached with caution. These foods include fermented foods and high-histamine foods.

Although foods in those categories provide beneficial nutrients and properties, a person with digestive issues may have increased food sensitivities.

This is a factor for some, not all. Keep a food journal so you can look back and see what is triggering your acne.

Eat For Your Needs

People who suffer from acne have commonalities, but there are many factors to consider when figuring out what to consume. Paying attention to your symptoms is essential.

Symptoms may not be triggered right away. Sometimes it takes several days for symptoms to occur. Also, actions can compound, causing a skin reaction to occur only because of something that occurred prior.

This makes it even trickier to navigate the road to recovery.

Elimination Diet - You may want to consider an elimination diet if you are not sure what is triggering your development of acne. As mentioned before, this can be done using a food journal.

What is an elimination diet? An elimination diet is the process of taking one food out of your diet at a time that you think may be triggering your acne to worsen. There are different ways to do this type of diet.

Basically, you take food out for a period of time and then reintroduce it into your diet again, tracking your symptoms and what you notice.

When you notice symptoms worsen with certain foods, taking them out for a period allows the body to heal. Oftentimes, that same food is better tolerated later down the road after the body has had time to get better.

Balance stomach acid

Our stomach acid plays important roles in digestion. It influences bacterial health in the microbiome, helps with healthy inflammatory responses, and supports proper nutrient uptake.

When acid is too low in the stomach, parasites and bacteria are more likely to thrive. These are triggers for upsetting skin health.

Additionally, when your body does not get appropriate nutrients, this not only upsets the gut microbiome, but it upsets the skin microbiome as well.

Therefore, balancing the acid through food intake and stress management can help restore your skin's health.

Probiotics

Probiotics are now readily available as a supplement on shelves as well as highlighted in or added to everyday food and beverage products. Even driving through a Starbucks offers an opportunity to buy a probiotic drink.

These microorganisms are vital to a healthy digestive system. They balance bacteria and support a healthy immune system, which leads to many digestive and skin benefits.

Balancing your microbiome will show in your skin health.  However, you should use probiotics with more caution than many do. Everyone responds to probiotics differently.

If you are taking probiotics or eating a bunch of fermented foods and breaking out, I highly recommend trying this brand of probiotics instead.

Treat Infections

Treat infections with care, and you may possibly see your acne disappear.

A digestive tract that is out of sorts and unbalanced is susceptible to parasites, SIBO, and other intestinal infections.

Treating these infections can help greatly reduce or eliminate an acne problem. Do not be surprised if your skin problems get a bit worse before better, though.

But treating the infection slowly, naturally, and possibly will help to keep the skin on track to slowly getting better is important.

Manage Stress & Mental Health

acne and mental health

With many, though not all,  neurotransmitters being made in the gut, such as serotonin, it is understandable how poor digestion can affect mood. This is because serotonin is a chemical involved in mood balancing.

However,  the gut also affects skin health. Therefore, the correlation between mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression and acne has been explored after previously being prematurely dismissed.

Fortunately, research persisted and shows a connection between the two.

This does not mean someone with depression will automatically have a problem with acne, but acne can become a symptom, and other skin conditions may be more likely to appear.

Managing your stress and getting appropriate help to balance your mood can have a significant impact on your acne outbreaks.

Avoid Unnecessary Toxins / Harmful Chemicals

You may be surprised at the amount of potentially harmful substances we take in through our breathing, skin, and food regularly.

Luckily for us, systems are in place to combat these threats. But your body can become overwhelmed with too many.

Acne will result for some as a way of telling the body that it cannot handle the toxic input.

Skin creams, makeup, preservatives, and poor digestion are all culprits.

Therefore, although digestion may be the biggest problem for your outbreaks, working on removing other toxic pollutants in your life will help your digestion work better, clearing up your skin faster.

This post Shared ways to get rid of acne caused by digestive symptoms. Working your way through possible causes and solutions allows you to know what works best for you. Keep a journal of what you do and your skin's reactions. Many times, it is a multiple-step process. Also, the process may be slower than you like, but the long-term results will be worth it.
